“The best career advice to give to the young is ‘Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.’”
-Katherine Whitehorn
This advice is for the not so young as well. I’d add one note of consideration to this quote: Be careful not to mistake what you like doing best for what comes easy to you. Those two things are not always the same and confusing the two is one sure way to ensure burnout. For example, project management may come easy to you: you are a genius with a work breakdown structure! An MS Project wizard! And you can manage the heck out of multiple teams with multiple deadlines, pleasing multiple stakeholders. But if your passion, what you really like doing is front end analysis or you dream of being part of a new product development team, you will never be satisfied by the accolades, pay raises and positive performance reviews.
Coaching Question: If you are doing what you’re good at and not what you love, how long are you going to settle for being dissatisfied?
