Leadership Is About Action… Not Your Title

In our society we have leaders and followers. Are we born to one or the other? No! Can you hone your leadership skills? Absolutely!

People respond to good leadership! Period! It is in all aspects of our lives, not just business. A mother is a leader in her home; a son may be leader of a team sport or a daughter the leader of the debate team. At work and at home, a group relies on the person in charge to set the tone, maintain order, and keep things on track. A true leader is not determined by title but by character, integrity and a desire to see the group or team succeed.

When it comes to work, leaders, regardless of their role or title, seem to have all of these in place:

  • They think BIG! Instead of limiting thoughts or ideas, no limit is set as to how big or how much better something can be.
  • The set firm goals and consistently pursue them, avoiding things that take them off focus.
  • They share their vision. Leaders make the final product, the end results that they are all going for known. This gives other people a chance to contribute to their vision, or give them feedback to help shape things.
  • They understand the art and value of influence and collaboration. It’s easy to be a leader of a team of 1, it is not easy to be an effective leader, when you don’t have others to lead.
  • They don’t rest on their laurels. Instead of waiting, they proactively go after what they want.  And when the first goals are met they set new goals or raise the bar.
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.
-John Quincy Adams

People will follow your lead willingly if you are honest, ethical, and if you consistently treat them with respect. Rewarding someone when a job is well done is always appreciated. Regardless of your title, you can choose to lead with integrity and inspire others to get things done.
