Browseworthy, Building Your Network

This week’s browseworthy links…

1. Failure should never be a goal, but it does make for rich learning opportunities. In his post, Managing by Mistakes, Roger Dooley explains: Our brains are wired to learn from failure, both as children and adults. The way we deal with success and failure in our efforts is a big factor in determining future performance. I couldn’t agree more. Dooley goes on to share quotes from How We Decide by Jonah Lehrer, which I will be adding to my reading list. You can check out Dooley’s article here: Neuromarketing.

2. Scott Ginsberg’s article Seven Habits of Highly Horrible Networkers is a fantastic list of what not to do when networking. It reminds me of the post I wrote, Keep Your Business Card to Yourself. My favorite bad habit from Scott’s post: #3 Dealing the Deck and #5 Sitting with the Wrong Company. Here’s a quick peek:

Highly Horrible networkers not only attend meetings with their friends and/or coworkers, but they talk and sit with them the entire time.

3. If your next best career move is switching careers and you are ready to explore potential moves, check out this list of possibilities: Top 60 Jobs That Will Rock the Future. The list breaks down into four categories health care, digital, environmentalism, and beyond. Most interesting: Custom Implant Organ Designer, Renewable Energy Technician, and Virtual Services Worker (think SecondLife admin).

4. Twitter Alert! One of the tips I share with clients looking to build their social networking circle is to learn to connect to the right people. I hear too many complaints about irrelevant posts and tweets as an excuse for not getting onto Twitter or Facebook. If that’s been your challenge, hurry and click this link to Resume Bear’s post 50 People on Twitter Job Seekers Should Follow. This is a great list of recruiters, newspapers and companies that are hiring.

  • My tip: If there is a company you are interested in working for, find their social networking profiles, sites and groups and connect.
  • Bonus tip: Check out the comments to this post for even more links!

5. A few weeks ago I found a great site for intrinsically motivated professionals, The Personal MBA. The site’s about statement starts: MBA programs don’t have a monopoly on business knowledge: you can teach yourself everything you need to know to succeed in life and at work. Of course I’m a fan. Good places to start: Are You an Implementer or an Enabler? and How to Get a Valuable Education Without Mortgaging Your Life.

Happy Browsing!
